Gas detection payloads for drones and quadruped robots

A payload small enough to fly and tough enough to walk, turning a fixed monitoring network into a survey tool.

A fixed network tells you what is happening at the points you thought of. A walking or flying platform tells you what is happening everywhere else, which is why inspection teams started carrying detectors on robots before the sensors were really ready for it.

Motion causes the trouble here, not the sensing element. A diffusion sensor on a moving platform reads a mixture of the plume and the disturbed air the platform itself created. Pumped sampling at constant flow, with the inlet placed away from the propeller wash or the robot gait, is what makes the reading defensible.

Data is the second problem. A survey produces a position and a concentration every second, and a CSV on an SD card is useless until someone plots it. Publishing standard ROS topics means the mapping software on the platform can build the concentration map directly.

Typical configuration

Payload Pumped sampling with sealed gas path, vibration-tolerant mount
Interface UART / RS485 / USB plus ROS or ROS2 topics
Buffering On-board storage for post-run upload when the link drops
Output Time-stamped concentration track for mapping software
